DJI Mavic Mini
New for 2019, the Mavic Mini drone from DJI weighs just 249g being designed to be just below the FAA weight limit of 250g for drones that need to be registered in the US.

This allows the Drone Pilot to purchase a very capable aircraft, without the need to notify anyone.

You still need to fly responsibly and adhere to the Drone Laws set out by the FAA UAV and drone guide.

Why is the weight of 249 grams important?

The weight of 249 grams places Mavic Mini in the lowest and safest weight class of drones, which in many countries may exempt it from certain regulations.

For example, in the United States and Canada, you can fly the Mavic Mini without the need to register your drone with the Government.

Please always check your local laws before flying as regulations are changing all the time.

Mavic Mini – what’s in the box?

When you receive the drone from DJI, it should consist of:

  • 1 x Aircraft (Gimbal Protector and Intelligent Flight Battery included)
    • The Gimbal Protector is on the aircraft already, just remove the shipping labels
  • 1 x Remote Controller (The control sticks are under the arms and just unclip for use)

Return To Home

The Return To Home (RTH) feature of the Mavic Mini is one of the reasons to buy it.

If you a new Drone Pilot or simply lose control of the aircraft due to high winds or poor visibility (it gets hard to track in the sky very quickly due to its small size) the RTH should get the drone back to the take-off point as long as you update the Home Point before leaving the landing zone.

The Mini has 2 downward facing sensors that see the landing zone and will even abort if it detects are area unsuitable for a safe landing.

Ideally use a Drone Landing Pad to give yourself a highly visible and stable target to land on.

In our experience, the mini may not land exactly inch-perfect on the target but it usually gets close enough or you can take over flying again under manual control once the drone is close to you.

Mavic Mini Accessories

With the huge popularity of the DJI Mavic Mini there has been a flood of new Mavic Mini Accessories coming to market.

Something to consider however is the weight. DJI was only just able to get the Mini to the magic 249g weight by stripping off everything they could.

If you start adding aftermarket accessories such as lights or landing foot extenders, you may push the weight over 250g meaning the drone now has to be registered with the FAA.
